Here in Germany, we are used to getting our drinking water from the tap. There are, however, regions around the world where people must walk for miles to get fresh water. What's more many of the rivers and lakes are highly polluted because of lax environmental laws. Perhaps the worst example of this is the Ganges in India which is thought to be one of the world's dirtiest rivers. REMONDIS is helping to change this situation.
Water pollution is one of India's biggest environmental problems – which is why wastewater treatment is one of REMONDIS' main contributions towards the Clean India Mission
REMONDIS is one of a group of companies participating in the Clean India project. This initiative was launched by the Indian government in 2014 and aims to get a handle on the country's huge environmental problems. A large part of their efforts is being directed at wastewater treatment and water management. According to official statistics, around half of India's population do not have access to a toilet which means they simply defecate in the open. The way industrial wastewater is handled is not much better. This can be put down to two main reasons: a general lack of environmental awareness and a lack of specialist knowledge and processing technology. And this is precisely where REMONDIS can help. As part of the Clean India Mission, REMONDIS Aqua – our subsidiary specialising in water management – is working at a variety of production plants and sewage treatment plants across the whole of the country. The services it provides cover all aspects of water management – primarily wastewater treatment – helping the country to conserve its natural resources and protect the environment.
Installing technology and demonstrating new techniques is just one part of our contribution towards the Clean India project. What is even more important than this is ensuring that the people and companies there can do this work themselves. Which is why we actively support the water and wastewater training courses held by the Indo German Competence Academy (IGCA) to combat the skills shortage in the water sector. Besides providing advice on the content of such courses, we also enable the participants to gain practical knowledge. The apprentices can do a two or three-week internship at REMONDIS' plants to see for themselves exactly how the technology works.

A company can only export what it has learned to do successfully at home. We have decades of experience of providing water management services in Germany – supplying drinking water, treating wastewater and, should our customers wish us to, actually running the pipe networks ourselves. We take care of all the details, from processing drinking water to operating sewage treatment plants. Services from which local authorities in particular can benefit and, as a result, each and every local resident as well.
Drinking water standards are most certainly high. The challenge of supplying industrial businesses with ultra-pure water, however, is even greater. Drinking water contains many substances that must be removed before it can be used in industrial production processes, for example salts. REMONDIS Aqua operates state-of-the-art facilities that can remove these unwanted substances. One of the most commonly used systems here is modern membrane technology which is able to filter out even the tiniest elements that have dissolved in the water. In addition, we are also able to provide reliable wastewater treatment services, using environmentally friendly processes to clean industrial wastewater. We are, therefore, helping to drive sustainability in this area, too.
